The last mile is the most expensive mile.
It is 41% of overall supply-chain cost12 and nearly all of the variance. Vans idle in traffic. Bikes stop at bridges. Drone delivery remains, for most of the urban core, in certification.
The street grid is saturated. The airspace sixty meters above it is empty, unmetered, and legally uncomplicated — and it has been in continuous commercial operation since 1850.

01 Lofts
Forty-one hardened rooftop nodes: climate-controlled dispatch and receiving, automated capsule intake and scanning, and a certified loft technician on every shift.
02 Corridors
Fixed flight corridors connect loft pairs at surveyed altitudes. Each corridor carries a published capacity in assets per hour and a wind ceiling above which dispatch holds automatically.
03 Assets
Every courier is an inducted, imprinted, performance-certified asset with a unique ID, a complete flight log, and a scheduled maintenance calendar. Mean corridor speed: 97 km/h.

99.2% weather-adjusted, trailing four quarters. Weather adjustment excludes intervals under an active wind advisory, which are not counted as scheduled availability.
Scheduled molt
Weeks W38–W44 are published network-wide capacity maintenance. Corridor capacity is reduced by up to 60% and the on-time commitment does not apply. Customers are notified in April.
Service credits
Delivery beyond window +15 min: 5% credit. Beyond +60 min: 25%. Loss events: re-flight at no charge plus declared-value reimbursement per the tariff schedule.
Meridian Aggregate Holdings routes its recurring inter-office documents across three Aviary corridors. Median dock-to-dock time fell from 4.1 hours by ground courier to 32 minutes. Misdelivery fell to zero: the destination loft is the only place the asset is capable of going. Meridian's procurement decision returned in 141 ms; corridor onboarding began the following Monday.
Operational questions
- What happens in bad weather?
- Dispatch holds. Corridors carry published wind ceilings and visibility minimums; payloads queue at the origin loft and release automatically when the corridor reopens. You are notified at hold, release, and delivery.
- What is a corridor loss event?
- Any dispatch that does not complete. The dominant cause is raptor contact; predation of trained couriers is quantified in the ornithological literature.9 Affected shipments are re-flown from the customer's retained original at no charge. Capsule contents are not recovered.
- Do you track my shipment by GPS?
- No. There is no positioning hardware aboard; positions are reconstructed from loft-side reads at dispatch and arrival. The network is unaffected by GNSS degradation events.
- How is this legal?
- Aviary operates under the long-standing legal framework for the keeping and flying of homing pigeons, which predates powered aviation. Our couriers are not aircraft within the meaning of 14 CFR Part 107.11
- Can I ship something heavier than 75 g?
- No.
